I began skateboarding around the age of 6. I still remember the green Veriflex board my parents got me for Christmas. It was cheap, terribly slow, and tons of fun. As i grew up, I began getting more and more interested in skateboarding; not because I was good at it, but it was something that I enjoyed.
Now that I am “out of my prime,” I have began skating again. I am by no means “good,” but I wholeheartedly enjoy the hour or so a week that I am able to go to the local parks, hangout with new friends and spend a little time away from the chaos of life.
This year, the city of Mobile built it’s first public skatepark. It is a beautifully designed space, perfect for beginners, advanced skaters and “old guys” like me. Although the park was built with government funds, it is by no means “complete.” The good folks at Woodenheart Skate Shop in Mobile have bent over backwards to make the dream a reality, and to show my support, I will also be fundraising to help build water fountains, extra trash cans, picnic tables and possibly even lights out on the park.
As a part of the “older” generation of skateboarders, it is our duty to lead by example and show the younger kids what it means to take care of and respect the skatepark. This means that we must come together and work towards helping Jewel at Woodenheart raise some extra cash to help fund the needs of the park to make it what is it today.
I will be making and selling some gear with all profits going straight to the skatepark fund. Below are some of the items we are currently pre-ordering.
The first run of items will feature “MOBILE” written in Japanese characters with the moniker “old guys skating” underneath. The Shirts will also offer the “OGs” logo (as seen above) on the right back shoulder of the shirt. The idea of staying away from simple english text shows the universality of skateboarding, and the fact that it knows no language, race, gender or age barriers. To pre-order items, please send an email to Gmail with the Items, size and quantity you would like to firstname.lastname@example.org. As of now, Hats are $20 and Tshirts are $20, and Decks are $35. The more we get to order, however, the more we can drop the price, while raising as much money as possible for the Skatepark!
